Cambridge University Bridge Club
Double Varsity Victory
This weekend saw the club's most important matches of the year, the open and undergraduate varsity matches. I am delighted to report that Cambridge were victorious in both matches.
In the 96 board Open Varsity Cambridge gradually built a lead, peaking at 51 IMPs after 80 boards, but with nothing to lose Oxford threw caution to the wind in the last two sets, staging a substantial comeback, but it was not enough, Cambridge eventually coming out winners by a mere 13 IMPs, 211 to 198.
In another close encounter, this time over 32 boards, teams of eight, the undergraduate team were also successful, pulling away from almost all square at half time to a winning margin of 26 IMPs.
Here are the winning teams:
The open team, from the left: David Williams (Jesus), Paul Walter (Wolfson), David Faria (Captain, Homerton), Tom Rainforth (Churchill), Sarah O'Connor (St Catherine's), John Haslegrave (Trinity):
The undergraduate team, from the left: Jackie Ang, Ong Qunxiang, Peteris Erins, Andrew Clegg, Peter Ford, Sean Eberhard, Peter Dutton (Missing, Sam Canham):

England U25 Trials
Congratulations to Dave Williams and David Faria for finishing second in the second weekend of the national U25 trials. Full results can be found
The bridge club meets every Thursday of Full Term. Meetings are usually in Selwyn College at 7PM, but be sure to check the timetable. We hold a light-hearted duplicate, and players of any standard are welcome—our current members range from beginners to international players. You can come along with or without a partner (we can always find someone to play with you).
We enter teams in the Eastern Counties League, the Portland Bowl (Inter-University Knockout competition), and other county and national competitions.
Membership costs £6 for the year (discounted after the Michaelmas term). The Thursday duplicates are £1.50 for current Cambridge University students, £2 for everyone else. Events cost £1 extra for non-members. We hold a variety of social events throughout the year, including an Annual Dinner in the Lent Term, a Garden Party in the summer; and don't forget those two highlights of the annual Cambridge sporting calendar: the Football and Cricket Matches against the Chess Club and the Tiddlywinks Club respectively.
